While at the Oxley Nature Center today I noticed a Monarch Way Station. According to Monarch Watch,  “The goals of this program are to restore 20 milkweed species, used by monarch caterpillars as food, to their native ranges throughout the United States and to encourage the planting of nectar-producing native flowers that support adult monarchs and other pollinators”. The monarch butterfly population has been steadily declining in recent years due to a variety of factors such as use of pesticides on roadsides and in yards which kills the plants on which the monarchs feed. The lawns in our local overly manicured neighborhood are devoid of any plant except Bermuda grass! The site offers information on how to start a Monarch Way Station, and I am hoping to start one in our yard. We also enjoyed viewing a very busy beehive. It was a great day to learn about…
